There is no railway, no airport at Aït Benhaddou and no direct bus. Everything from Marrakech goes over the Tizi n’Tichka pass on the N9 — around 180 km and, since the recent road widening, roughly three to three and a half hours in a car.
That leaves five realistic options. Here is how they compare.

1. Guided day trip — easiest, and usually cheapest
Around €20–30 for a twelve-hour round trip including transport, hotel pickup and a driver-guide. It is genuinely cheaper than doing it yourself by taxi, and you get the photo stops on the pass that you would never find alone. The catch is time: you get about two hours at the ksar.

2. Bus to Ouarzazate, then a taxi
CTM and Supratours run several coaches a day from Marrakech to Ouarzazate — around four hours for 100–140 MAD. From Ouarzazate bus station, a grand taxi to Aït Benhaddou (30 km) costs a few hundred dirhams for the whole car, or you can pay per seat and wait for it to fill. This is the best route if you plan to stay the night.
3. Grand taxi
Shared grand taxis to Ouarzazate leave from Marrakech when full and cost a little more than the coach. They are faster and considerably less comfortable: six passengers in an old Mercedes on a mountain road is an experience you will only want once.
4. Private transfer or private tour
From about €150 for a car and driver one way, or roughly €195 for a two-day private itinerary. This is the only way to add the Ounila valley back road and Telouet, and the only way to stop wherever the light is good.
5. Self-drive
The N9 is now a well-surfaced, widened two-lane road with barriers on the exposed sections. It is not difficult, but it is 100 km of continuous bends with slow lorries to overtake. Leave Marrakech early, do not attempt the descent in the dark on your first run, and fill up before the pass.
Coming from elsewhere
- From Ouarzazate: 30 km, 30–40 minutes. Grand taxi, hotel transfer or a half-day tour.
- From Ouarzazate airport (OZZ): around 40 minutes by taxi — the quickest way into the region if you fly in.
- From Fes or Merzouga: a long day’s drive. Most people arrive on a multi-day desert tour instead of doing it independently.
- From Agadir: roughly 6 hours via Taroudant, or on a multi-day tour.
How long does the drive really take?
Google will tell you three hours. In practice, allow three and a half to four with a photo stop and a coffee at the pass, and add half an hour on a Friday or during Ramadan when the road is busier. Coaches take four.
