Kasbah Taourirt sits at the eastern end of Ouarzazate’s main avenue and is the reason the town exists at all: a Glaoui stronghold guarding the junction of the Draa and Dades routes. At its height in the 1930s several hundred people lived inside — the pasha’s family, servants, craftsmen, and a Jewish quarter with its own synagogue.
What survives is a dense tangle of towers, alleys and courtyards in ochre pisé, part of it restored with UNESCO and CERKAS support and open to visitors. It is smaller and more manageable than Aït Benhaddou, and because it is in town rather than out in a valley, it slots neatly into an afternoon.
Top things to do at Kasbah Taourirt
Tour the restored apartments
The visitable section covers the reception rooms and family apartments, with painted cedar ceilings, carved plaster and a rooftop view over the palmeraie.
Walk the surrounding alleys
The unrestored quarter outside the ticketed area is still lived in. Wander respectfully — it is one of the few places you see a kasbah as a neighbourhood rather than a monument.
Cross to the Cinema Museum
Directly opposite: props, costumes and sets from the local film industry, quick and cheap.
How to get to Kasbah Taourirt
- In Ouarzazate: at the east end of Avenue Mohammed V, walkable from most of the town centre.
- From Aït Benhaddou: 30 km, about 35 minutes by taxi.
- By tour: included as a stop on most Marrakech–Ouarzazate day trips.
Insider tips
- Entry is around 60 MAD; an on-site guide costs a little more and is worth it, as almost nothing is labelled.
- Allow an hour, or 90 minutes with the alleys outside.
- Late afternoon light on the ochre walls is the best of the day, and it is the coolest time to walk.
