Telouet was the mountain capital of Thami El Glaoui, the "Lord of the Atlas", who controlled the caravan pass and, from the 1920s to independence in 1956, effectively ran southern Morocco as a French client. When he fell, his properties were abandoned. Telouet has been melting back into the hillside ever since.
That contrast is the point of visiting. From the piste it looks like a ruin nobody would bother stopping for. Then a caretaker unlocks a door and you walk into two reception rooms of carved cedar ceilings, painted stucco and floor-to-ceiling zellij tilework in astonishing condition — 1950s Moroccan craftsmanship at full volume, with the roof falling in one room away.

See the restored salons
Two rooms on the first floor retain their full decorative scheme. Look up: the cedar ceilings were carved and painted in Fez and carried here by mule.
Climb to the roof terrace
From the top the whole Ounila valley opens up, with the salt caravan route running away south. It is also the best place to grasp how big the complex was — around 300 rooms.
Visit the salt pans at Zerkten
A short drive away, families still cut salt from the terraced pans by hand — the commodity that made Telouet rich in the first place.
How to get to Telouet Kasbah
- From the Tizi n’Tichka: a signposted turn-off about 20 km south of the summit, then 21 km of good road. Roughly 25 minutes each way.
- From Aït Benhaddou: 40 km up the Ounila valley on the P1506 — the scenic route, allow two hours.
- By tour: included on some private 2-day Marrakech itineraries and most Ounila valley trips.
Insider tips
- Entry is around 20–30 MAD and the caretaker expects a tip; there are no set opening hours, but someone is almost always there between 09:00 and 18:00.
- It is high and cold — 1,800 m. Bring a layer even in summer, and expect snow on the approach in January and February.
- Combine it with the Ounila valley drive rather than doubling back to the N9; the loop is far better than the out-and-back.
